Ethnicity and Use of the Mental Health act conference

This one day event will focus on the exploration of some of the following questions:

• How should we interpret these findings?

• Is racism the main issue behind the fact that some BME groups are over represented in terms of admission and detention rates and also the increased use of certain diagnostic categories such as schizophrenia?

• Should we be focusing on understanding and learning why certain BME groups are not over represented?

• Have the changes to the Mental Health Act been detrimental or helpful? To whom?

Who Should attend?

This conference will be relevant to anyone in the field of mental health and social care. Also, officers from local authorities and NHS trusts across the UK, mental health professionals and practitioners, including Approved Mental Health Professionals, charities, third sector, educational establishments, the legal profession, academics and policy makers. Limited free places are available to service users and carers.

A one day conference exploring hate and hidden crime.

The conference aims to provide delegates with the opportunity to hearfrom and question practitioners working on a range of initiatives totackle hate and hidden crime.Hatred is a strong term that goes beyond simply causing offence orhostility. Hate crime is any criminal offence committed against a personor property that is motivated by an offender's hatred of someonebecause of their:race, colour, ethnic origin, nationality or national origins• religion• gender identity• sexual orientation• disability

Showing The Wolf Inside Film
On 14th October at 3pm, the St. Thomas’ Lupus Trust will be showing the film ‘The Wolf Inside’.  The film is about lupus patient N’Deaye Ba’s struggle with lupus in what was to be the last months of her life, she died aged just 32.  

N’Deaye was an actress and regularly appeared on television in programmes such as Trial & Retribution and her final programme, Jericho with Robert Lindsay.

 The film is very personal, sad and moving and shows N’Deaye’s battle with no holds barred. It also shows the relationship between N’Deaye and her mother, Christina who at the same time was fighting leukaemia.

One Town, One Community Festival in Rotherham

On Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th of September 2009, from 11.00am to 6.00pm at Rosehill Park, Rawmarsh will host the One Town, One Community – World Musical Festival for the first time. As part of the Rotherham Show the Brass, Folk and Diversity Festivals will come together to deliver a unique programme of music, food and dance from around the world.

A free park and ride service will be in operation from Herringthorpe Playing Fields and Ryecroft Sports Ground, Rawmarsh. The bus from Herringthorpe will also pick up in the town centre on Wharncliffe Street (next to RCAT). For full details see the Herringthorpe timetable and the Ryecroft timetable.

The event is being organised by the Rotherham Diversity Festival group and Rotherham Arts. This year the group is looking for volunteers, community artists, dancers and musicians to get involved in this years’ festival.

The Dovedale and Bunster Hill walk is 8.5 miles (allow 5 hours).  We kick off from Dovedale car park at 12.30. The car park is situated equidistant from Thorpe and IIam, northwest of Ashbourne and 4km west of the A515. Grid Reference 147 508.  Izaak Walton Hotel is near the start and finish.

New bilingual asthma information available

New bilingual asthma information available from Asthma UK

Asthma UK has developed two bilingual booklets to help South Asian people who have received emergency care for an asthma attack.

‘After your Asthma Attack' and ‘After your Child's Asthma Attack', previously only available in English, are now available in Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi and Urdu.

The booklets include a section - to be filled in by the healthcare professional with the patient or carer - on what medicines should be taken in the first few days following an attack, and how to keep asthma under control following an attack.
